A day trip from Uttarkashi: darshan of Maa Ganga, a riverside puja in very cold water, and a beautiful drive through Harsil.

We visited Gangotri by road from Uttarkashi and returned to the same hotel. Gaumukh is a separate trek that we did not attempt.
Uttarkashi district lists Gangotri as about 100 km from the district headquarters. That is an approximate one-way reference, not our measured driving distance. Our April 2026 route was Uttarkashi → Gangotri → Uttarkashi, with stops around Harsil and viewpoints along the way.
We made it a full-day outing: an early departure, morning darshan and riverside puja, then a return to the same Uttarkashi hotel for a second night. We did not record a reliable driving duration or temple queue time. Confirm road conditions and the expected return time with your driver; allow separately for temple visits, meals and viewpoint stops.
Our Gangotri Temple visit was reached by road with walking around the temple and riverbank. Gaumukh is a separate trek beyond Gangotri; we did not undertake it with our children. The district identifies Gaumukh as the river’s source at the Gangotri Glacier. Check the current permit and access requirements separately if you plan that trek.
We carried phones during our April 2026 visit. We photographed the temple exterior and surroundings, but priests did not allow photographs of Maa Ganga directly. There was a place for footwear. We did not use or notice a phone-deposit facility. Carrying a phone and permission to photograph are separate matters; follow current instructions.
We used a lota for a ritual bath and carried containers for Gangajal. A towel and warm, dry clothing were useful because the river water was extremely cold. Visiting the riverbank does not require following every ritual our family chose.

We left Uttarkashi early and reached Gangotri in the morning. We had darshan of Maa Ganga, took a ritual bath using a lota at the Bhagirathi, did a puja on the riverbank and collected Gangajal.
We also saw Bhagirath Shila, the Gauri Kund area and the smaller shrines around the temple complex, then drove back to Uttarkashi for a second night.
