Real journeys. Practical pilgrimage guides.
Darshan Routes began after we completed the Uttarakhand Char Dham with our two young children in April 2026. Many of the practical details we learned along the way were difficult to find in one place beforehand.
Darshan Routes is our attempt to fix that, starting with the Char Dham and, in time, other sacred journeys.
This is an independent guide. It is not an official government, temple committee or tourism website, and we are not a tour operator. For registration, temple schedules, helicopter bookings and anything else official, please use the relevant official authorities.
Our editorial approach
First-hand experience is labelled
Anything we did or saw ourselves is marked “We did this”, with the month we did it.
Traditions are described as traditions
We write about religious meaning with respect, and as what tradition holds or what pilgrims believe, not as verified fact.
Operational details are checked, or flagged
Where possible we check registration rules, dates, helicopter rules and prices against official sources. Where we haven’t yet, we say so.
Journeys are dated
Each first-hand guide shows when the journey happened and when the page was last reviewed.
Changing information is clearly marked
Anything likely to change sits in a “Verify before travel” box, never in the middle of our story.
Corrections are welcome
If you travelled more recently or know something we got wrong, we want to hear it and will update the page.
How to read this guide
We use these labels to distinguish different kinds of information: what we experienced, what we recommend, what tradition holds, and what changes and must be checked. Look for these labels.

- What we did, saw and paid on our own journey in April 2026. It is one family’s experience, not a rule.
- Our tip
- Our subjective recommendation. Other pilgrims may reasonably choose differently.
- With children
- Advice that comes from travelling with our children, aged 4 and 7 at the time.
- Tradition
- What tradition holds or what many pilgrims believe, described respectfully as belief, not verified fact.
- Verify before travel
- Registration, dates, prices, helicopter rules, darshan systems, weather and road restrictions. These change; check current official information.
- Local gem
- A stop outside the four dhams that we would especially point a friend to.
Corrections
Temple rules, registration systems and prices change, and memory is imperfect. We review these pages and update them when we learn that something has changed, and each page shows when it was last updated.
